Opinion on the Couchsurfing.org Project

editMy name is ChriS SMITH ; “CS” are my initials and “CSerS” are a personal issue , because this project must be respected...as hosts & guests should have mutual respect and trust,, 

I have had the extremes of CSerS ... A gritty girl, Raz, doing a walk to Istanbul.. one time James from England obviously scattered his requests so much, that he asked me to couch “tomorrow or Sunday” One of the dangers, as I have found out through my charitable & voluntary projects, is that when something is “free” 

..SOME people don’t respect it.. 

I recently had my first travel outside of the Balkans in the last Year and thanks to "Gi" for her hospitality and for giving me a key! 

Yet as i write this Miss O'B (if she exists at all) decides to give me a negative...hmmmmm ("no good turn goes unpunished") as i had more than 50 guests last year, three "bad ones" isnt too bad.. and even though now I am "careful" of requests & communications from dubious contacts or those with no references..I still reply to all. ;) 

I HAVE HAD some great moments & visitors last summer.I made a deliberate decision, due to the somewhat “superficial cafe society clique” to remain here in Pg, hosting not travelling much ... 

The CSer “Balkan Family” meeting in Piran may 2012 was smallish & great & the Albanian reggae weekend @ jal beach , also a visit to Novi Sad, with Anna meeting me there!) but the friendly town and people of Prizren was spoilt by some selfish B*tches and A**holes... 

..and whilst CSing is a great project, ...and I can immediately thank the following CSers for contributing to a wonderful social experience and party-time this summer... 

• “Les (3) Girls” from Brussels.. 
• Maije & Jolanta from Riga...especially @ Skadar/Virpazar 
• “G” @ Virpazar and last night dancing @ “Ragina Glava”  (and hosting me in Vilnius) 
• Serjan & his mate Oggie “boys night out” @ kicking a ball in the garden..(in spite of fickle Fred!) ;) 
• Sitting in the park, just talking with Anna M from St Pete, and her “film-starring” on the lake & mount by Sute-more beach. (15days hosted) 
• Mathilde (off the French Dole) also swimming off the boat 
• Jakub & Tomek, talking over brunch in the garden.. 
• Jayde from Oz & Taiwanese Jade, one just chilled, the other danced.. 
• The aptly names Serena, who suffered her “kim” 
• “Taking care” of exhausted Sylvie.. 
• Launching Cathy & Moritz into their natural adventure.. 
• Corey & his buddies on Jal Beach.. 
• Getting Phil & Antje started on their 2 to 1 project.. 
• Chatty Magda & quiet Hana, eventually bringing us rain..coming & going again.. 
• Watching Champions League @ Pg stadium with polish CSers Alexsandra & her Boyfriend.. 
* Exchanging REdS ideas & stories with Rene, from Minsk 
• A funny dance with Anna S , whilst her funny boyfriend got lost during the “olympic medal party” ;) 
• Chatting with Kike (Spanish from Brasov volunteers) & his appreciation of the Pg “night scene” ;) 
• Cooking fish & drinking more Vino , with NT-ella ...a joint venture? ;) 

..Antje & Phil , hosting them and going to the music fest @Jal beach.. 

Many, many positive memories.. 
BUT.... 

There are several anonymous "time wasters"(Iwona & others)or "bogus" profiles who cancelled late or didnt inform me...plus... 

Although I had already hosted the 4 girls & showed them Pg, (we had a funny moment when a local waitress saw them rolling their own tobacco Ciggies in Pg..) Paddy & co (the "doughnuts from Berlin") missed the party I arranged for them , changing their plans at the last minute,...) I introduced them to Rakija at "BerlinCaffe" ("Paddy" got an ashtray, see my photos)I am sure they wanted "to be alone" but didnt think about the trouble i might have gone to to arrange a farewell party for them.. 

Anna M ; her distant & new (jealous) boyfriend didnt have the trust...and despite we spent 15 of her 30 days here, she gave in to his negativity..shame... 

Nadya K, didnt keep in touch, so i didnt know if they were coming to Pg or not...! ..waiting for Sophie to say if she was coming.. I spent time and energy to make an effort to host Tina & friend, but she didnt respect my hosting, some CSers must remember hosts are not hotels or hostels we mostly do this for fun & friendship… 

& C1A Fred, who spoiled a special boys night out, because he was NOT the “centre” of attention,… accused me of having been a drunk (“drunk a dozen beers!”) and acting as a hooligan, … I don’t drink beer, I drink wine..and I was fine, some locals objected to the turkish lads..and the pub decided WE should leave.. ((a) I first had contact with Fred when he "volunteered" me for HIS CSer Balkans meeting.. ONE WEEK before it shd start, and he didnt ask me, because he couldnt be bothered with it..) 
b) without a couch request I anyway hosted him, the 2 others from Istanbul (who were "registered" with me, and we waited for him to arrive, I bought him drinks and paid for the taxi to my place..gave him breakfast..used my place as a hostel..(moved my cable without ask!) 
c) he never offered any contribution to wards money or effort.. d) There was no"plan or Itinerary" we 4 spontaneously decided to go "to test Pg night life" ("boys night") ..didnt offer to pay.. (expecting us to pay all) he wanted us to go when HE wanted) …a spoil brat… 

And probably that last comment identifies the problem, some people are spolit.. Miki K. from Tokyo, (profile deleted!) was obviously not a true CSer, just wanted cheap accommodation and someone to buy her drinks? 

Kim…well she occupied my living room, after they (2 ) were supposed to tent in the garden… she got sick, so I didn’t make a “negative reference@ but I suspect that she suffers from “spoilt brat” syndrome too, I wont list my “complaints” here as she apologized. 
(*then turned up @ Prizren!!!..arrrggghhh!) 

.and I am doing my best to remain positive..but just with a word of caution.. 

I even had a few "evil mails".. (abusive) 

The above was written after 2012...the following relates to 2013.. 

There were more "time wasters" it seems as MNBE and CSing becomes more attractive, so some MORE ppl exploit it and abuse it.. 

2013 

* had a "hangover" from the previous year "Toma" a girl 
living in Manchester (!!! "we arent racist , we only hate.."..ha ha ) .. one of the "age-ists" who seem to think CSing is just for kids.. 

* Gabrielle asked for advice, and was nice , even though she didnt stay..
* Elif From Istanbul , my first visitor of the Year 
we talked a lot during rare bad weather and was a pleasure.. 
* Antje left me a positive reference..good memories from 2012.. 
* Chloe didnt show, and I think she is bogus (nothing on her profile..) ..a time waster! 
* Taryn didnt show, but she apologised, at least 
* Harvey, ok, & the BMM people , didnt go to UE 
* Michaelina didnt come either, and also aplogised, but LATE! 
* THEN Zhujeta & THIRTEEN (13) cyclists in their way to paris, FREAKED the neighbourhood, 2 days with tents & music in the garden ...ha ha, something of a record! 
* "Charlotta" another Time-waster from N.York didnt! 
* But Minna from LA came to dinner and we went to Skadar.. said nicer things about me! :) 
* and when it was too quite I had LODZ of fun & "Justyna time" 
* and RAQUEL. what a girl .. only 24hrs but almost a lifetime ..so much synergy.. was sad to see her go, too 
* A young Belgian lad cycling through, a calm time. 
* Daniela R. left another positive remark, thanks. 
* Kamil & Olga, tented, also quiet, relaxed stopover 
* then in BIG contrast came Stee, like a younger brother, we had a LOT of fun, and he came back again (to finish off the Rakija) even played for our team.. Good time mate! 
* and a tired couple Doroto & Peter, calmed things down again.. 
* I introduced Beatrix & Mal to "Borat2" in the mountains.. he confused them but we had a "chill out sunday" so Mal could recover.. it was ok.. 
* Then LILLYA .. could hardly speak a word - but that made it "funny" too, went to Skadar & "Berlin" made me smile even though it was "lost in translation" 
* Moritz with a late, great reference (but nothing from his cat...) ...(joke?)
* Dorie & Mary (or Mary 2?) ..just pasted their comments ; "home, laughing, cooking and drinking wine. I liked his sence of humor and his breakfast he made for us in the morning."(sense of humOUR, girls!) good memories :) 
* Raech & Helen ; the english "Thelma & Louis" ? - ha ha .. Virpazar, lunch @the lake, swim from boat & OUR caffe and most of all the dancing..THANKS !! 
* Barca guys Miguel & Ferran; join the "International Fudbal party & Turnir" & repaid me by making a "4 hour Tortilla" ...never mind! ha ha .. 
* and the lasses Agus & Luci from Buenos Aires, cooked and discussed with me too AND showed the local lads THEY CAN PLAY (football!)TOO!! another pleasure for me to host them. 
* there was the saxon 6 when Liz & friends tented in the garden, overloaded the Kitchen and I grilled, a bit loud until rain cooled us down.. and Tolosi was quiet again.. 

There have been some strange requests, at times I had as many as a dozen, and many dont look at my profile (a mistake) but many more good memories.. even though 2 swiss girls didnt bother nor 2 yan kers either (no surprise) the prejudices of Artus buddies (BMM UE & Thess.)or a "neutral" time with Vita ; was more than compensated by having an international surprise birthday party for Juli in Tirana hostel, with Zhujeta, Bart, Rick & Mary (a scouser!!) .. even playing ping-pong & pool with "Mr. not special" was funny..so overall another good year of CSing.. and I am still here 

9 out of 10 people were good company..and in a cynical world where so many people are negative , this was/is a GOOD result..! ;)

I may be located in the next room or stay nearby ..so it may be that guest will have private couch..depends on situation .there is a couch-bed in private (studio) rooms (with kitchen) toilet next door.. extra "living room" in garden, where we have meals outside during most of the year.. there is a cheap hostel nearby if u prefer, or are in a large group.. sometimes U can pitch your tent in the garden - most of the year its warm enough..

a single couch at the moment, my other room couch COULD be extended to double in "times of need" I live alone, but theres a backpacker hostel in the city too.no pets, i smoke sometimes, (rarely at home) & drink (vino) socially..close to bus stop..i have blankets and i am in "Toloshi" suburb of Podgorica (Pg) and Pg is central and easy for getting to coastal or mountain regions..I would rather decide on "length of stay" depending on time of year, room is clean with garden if u have own tent..i expect Csers to be sociable and who like to connect and socialise, ..

IF I have accepted to host u, but the c 1 a block communications ; I suggest u go to "Caffe Berlin" Njegoseva 24, Old Town, Podgorica (its about 10/15 mins walk from Bus/train station) dont get in an unmarked taxi, only use Taxis with a number on the door..

also, I can arrange a local (cheaper) taxi to pick u up IF you arrive by plane @ Podgorica airport...

if U H-H...please keep in touch and try to keep to agreed arrival date/time as I have a calendar and if U are expected , its possible I will refuse others, who may need accomodating.

take care of others and yourselves with respect and honesty and we will surely share a good time. :) Lake, Beach, Mountains Nature & Monastery are all easy to get to from where I am...& there's "Podgorica by night" which is lively 7 nights a week, .so, dont be a "typical tourist" ...because ..."We are the club" :)
on that note .. IF u come to Podgorica (& if u like football, or just being sociable with local people)...
I am often at the "Sportski Centre Katun" .. the "tREdS-CSerS" team play every sunday evening, and meet often & @ different times, to watch games, train and i coach kids too,

if u come from the old town (main square) centre go over to the "novi Grad" (new town) side of the river... keep walking from the centre outwards on the main boulevard.. (over bridge "Most Blaza Jovanovic") ...via "Bulevar Svetig Petra Cetinjscog" .. keep walking...past the shops & cafes KEEP walking same direction (maybe 3 or 4 traffic lights) .. out of the main city u will see the park..(Toloska suma) and "Trim Caffe" walk through the park on the left side and look for an Electricity station - (lots of wires & electric cable on the left side of the park" ) .. from there behind the electricity station u should see a "Green Balloon" shaped structure, the "Katun Caffe" is there between 2 football courts... u may be lucky and be greeted with a glass of Rakija, Sliva , Vino or Pivo, or if U prefer a kafu or chai (tea)... a lot depends on your mentality, if u come with a positive energy & respect u WILL have a GOOD experience,,,and i will be "made up" :)

Chris hosted me and my friend for 4 nights in Podgorica, and we had a great time!
He made us breakfast EVERY morning, showed us around the city and even took us to a beautiful lake nearby. Moreover, we went to eat typical dishes from Montenegro, and what's better, he let us play a football match with his friends!!
Thanks a lot Chris for the hospitality and kindness. Whenever you decide to come to Argentina, you know you have 2 Latin American friends :)

Chris is probably one of the most interesting man I have ever met, I had a really good time with him in Podgorica. We played a football tournament, even I'm a basketball player I enjoyed very much. He introduced me some of his friends which were nice. We spent great time in his place, drinking toloshi drinks and having fascinating talks. I can say that I learned a lot from him, specially by his life's experiences. i highly recommend him!!

There once was a man named Chris, whose generosity is hard to miss. I stayed in his house, and in wine I was doused, on my first couch surfing tryst. 

I stayed at his house for two days, nomming his food and hearing about his ways. He was my first host, and with no threat of a boast, he was amazing in so many ways!

He gave us his time to show us the sights, got us discounts no one else knew about.He cooked and entertained, and without a refrain, even gave us some Liverpool shirts!

These 2 are near the end of a long H-H journey..Dorota was very tired when they arrived, and quite shy, Peter also tired but stayed awake to have a lively discussion, over Rose and Red Monty vino..they stayed In a tent in the garden, I didnt really get to know them much, in just 1 night , but they seemed ok. I made them breakfast and showed them the way...

Poem:
When i arrived i got picked up by a car. The driver held up a shield with my name, made me feel like a star.

As a welcome drink there was this unbelievabel Rakija, with cherisch taste, so we did not waste.

going out with Chris was very good fun, a lot of drinks, dance, dance, dance all night long, untill it was gone.

Went to the coast, always with good advices from my host.

Met this incredible girl, spent two days, a perfect company i'd follow to every place. When she was gone one day, she also carried my heart away.

Later on we went together up the hills, in company with two american girls. Got amazingly rafted by the tara, spent two nights at the cabin, very well organized by Chris, beside a swiss flamming.

There always on our side, our guide. with a voice like borat, me like, good choice.

Chris is the perfect host, a friend, a brother almost. If you ever come to my place, my house is your home, as you might have known, you`ll never walk alone :).

My girlfriend Olga and me spend 2 days at Chris place in Podgorica. It was very nice, he has a beatiful home and a garden in a quiet neighbourhood. We met in Cafe Berlin in the centre of Podgorica, than Chris took us to his home, in which we spent a nice evening chating with him and her guests from USA. Pity, that we didn't spent more time together - maybe next time, who knows? Thank you once again for hosting us.

Me and my travel mate liisi arrived to podgorica quite early in the morning and chris welcomed us. we surely needed to get a rest after a long journey. i woke up with fever and was cured with home made rakija. we were toured around the city, we got tips to other visits around montenegro. we also had some pleasant meals at home, along with nice montenegrian red wine and interesting chats. it was, overall, a very good experience!

“strange”….”Charlotta” took 18 days to inform me she isnt coming to Pg, and although she seems to have been registered over 3 years, and seems to have travelled the whole world, she dont have ONE single reference,, be careful with this dubious lady! :)

hmmm i get some more "dubious" requests and people who dont know their plans.. and this one waited 6 months,..to complain?? it's getting ridiculous..!

Not only positive but very positiv to host 14 people in his garden and even :) give us a big tent to sleep, use his house like our house and make us lough. Full of interesting conversations, funny and very openminded. Biking all the time all you can dream of is a warm shower and a smile and Chris gave this all to us. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! so put yourself in this situation, someone is meant to meet you in an airport in a country uve never been to, and then you arrive there and you look around and there is no one waiting for you, he then goes on to complain and say my profile is fake??? if my profile is fake why are you agreeing to meet me in the first place, you can say what you want in response to this, you have your 'theories' all i ca say is please if you read this DO NOT TRUST THIS GUY he is full of false promises, i even tried calling him and texting him but he 'didnt' receive my messages or phone calls, so annoyed over this situation and this guy, i should have really checked out the negative comments on his page before i decided to trust him!

Chris hosted me for three nights in Podgarica, a city which people say that is boring. :D But when we went around with Chris, it seems not more boring that most other places in the Balkans. :D We went to the little fishing village, where I was treated with home-grown tea and spices. Chris is a very sociable person, he talks a lot and he listens a lot, too. It was amazing having conversations with him about life and relationships, I needed it. Indeed: I had nothing else than peanuts that I put on his table.

Beware: Chris is a hooligan! Only interested about his Liverpool football club and drinking very much. There was no acquaintance possible. He was arrogant when he didn't bother listening to me neither I was tired. I expect CouchSurfers SOME cultural exchange and inspiring stories. Obviouly not him. Yes, traveling few months is tiring and low-budget. He drunk dozen beers in a single evening... Should I care and pay for an alcoholic? NOT TO MENTION he was so wasted, a few locals threw him away from the bar at 3am and he couldn't do anything but burst out laughing as he actually didn't pay any drink. Another kind of unlawful hooligan behavior.

I have never had such wasted evening in my life. Really.
He was rude at home with me. I didn't feel welcome.
Plus, he paid taxi, made good omelet but that doesn't buy myself (bribe).
I don't know what such guy is doing in this traveling community!

a) I first had contact with Fred when he "volunteered" me for HIS CSer Balkans meeting.. ONE WEEK before it shd start, and he didnt ask me, because he couldnt be bothered with it..
b) without a couch request I anyway hosted him, 2 others from Istanbul (who were "registered" with me, and we waited for him to arrive, I bought him drinks and paid for the taxi to my place..gave him breakfast..used my place as a hostel..(moved my cable without ask!) 
c) he never offered any contribution to wards money or effort..
d) There was no"plan or Itinerary" we 4 spontaneously decided to go "to test Pg night life" ("boys night")
..didnt offer to pay..
(expecting us to pay all) he wanted us to go when HE wanted) a spoil

Met the texan C1A Albanian HQ leader ^ his "team colleagues" at the South Vibes event @ JAL and despite the opposite "cultural differences" had a good time with him and his buddy Angelino (?) .. ha ha.... good job U stopped that Table in the concert from falling over!!

Chris, the Samaritan :) Will be remembered by generously given rides and trying to take over the Balkan Mafia. In vain. 
We had fun all the way to, at and after the 11th Balkan Mafia meeting and even the night before in Podgorica where he hosted me on his birthday. He was the driver, I was the navigator and we both had to keep each other sleepless during those long rides. Hard times.

Chris is not a usual cser. His big love isn't cs but Liverpool but he manages to merge the two together pretty well. His big smile, kindness and generosity cannot be described with words. He has a child's heart in a grown up body without being childish himself, unless the situation requires it. Chris is full of surprises, a new story every day, it will take you quite a while to figure him out and this is very interesting. Totally a must see if you are in Montenegro or wherever else he is around!

"CS..concept is GOOD, when things go well its fantastic and a positive experience that I have enjoyed mouch of this year
..& all summer, with visiting CSers...BUT it could get spoiled by a (growing?) minority
...who seem to think/act as if its just a system of getting free accomodation and treat hosts
as if we are hostels/hotels just sitting waiting for arrivals 24/7...

IF..in ANY other aspect of my life ..visitors known or new , told me they were coming to visit, then did NOt turn up, or fail to tell me they were delayed
by hours or days....THEY would be considered ANTI-SOCIAL by any reasonable CSer Host!

lets keep "time-wasters" out of the system!

A little bit complicated to connect with Aleksandra and her boyfriend the first time they CS-d!!! but it worked out and we saw the game in Podgorica where their team FC SLASK happily won, and despite a delay by "Monty riot police" we had a few hrs to know each other a little bit, am hoping to meet them in Monty again or in Liverpool (for anti-manc education! )OR in their polish home or maybe AlekS U can join the "CS accademy"?? so, pse dont go to the USA! :) Aleks & her boyfriend (biking through balkans) were nice easy people ...
